sculptural sketch

sculptural sketch* while Artist In Residence at The Centrum Foundation in Port Townsend, Washington USA for the month of October, 2020

components of this sketch

two physical objects:

  1. fold-up roll-away metal bed frame including: portable strap headrest, one found waxed cardboard piece used as a mat, one hand-created cardboard mat made using a papermaking process
  2.  wheeled pole mounted motion light with electrical cord

my acting body:

playing with my body connecting the 2 objects and dragging them through an unpopulated urban area on the move toward something possibly in search of a safe place and an opportunistic electrical source for the accompanied motion light

technical explorations:
can I make my own cardboard
can I rewire a hardwired motion light

conceptual explorations:
opportunistic existence
notions of security
the culture of surveillance
the concept of tethering which allows for a range of motion albeit limited
(This piece was made during a Covid-19 pandemic.)

place explorations:
research on the local papermill factory that makes cardboard

*I speak of this piece as a sketch as I do not see it as a fully realized piece, instead it is a sketch, an experiment or series of explorations that might morph into something else or at least inform my next works. I chose to include this sketch as I am aware that it contains some important explorations.
